Circumnavigation 1/2 done… and Indian visa in hand.
Sean | June 8, 2009I just checked, and I have actually visited 2 places that are nearly exact opposites on the Earth…
I drove thru Chincha Alta, Peru twice on the way to Lima… Once as part of that marathon 60 hour bus trip from Mendoza, Argentina, and once on the way back from seeing the Nazca Lines.
Chincha Alta is nearly opposite Siem Reap, Cambodia – give or take a few kilometers. Actually, the main road in downtown Chincha is almost exactly antipodal to the temples at Angkor Tom…
…so I’m pretty confident that I’ve tread across two opposite ends of the Earth in the last three months. Now that I’ve been to 2 antipodal points, all I need to do is get back to where I started, and the scientific description of a circumnavigation is technically fulfilled.
Honestly, I was hoping this would happen, but it was pure, blind luck that this worked out… I figured I’d probably have to go to Cordoba, Spain since it’s exactly opposite Hamilton, New Zealand (where we made a rest stop on the Magic Bus Tour).
Finally, I did get my visa for India today, so my non-refundable plane ticket to Bangalore on June 16th is good!!!
